Emotional Earthquake Relief Print E-mail

It has been a week since the little country of Haiti was devastated by an earthquake which has left the entire world reeling. It will be years before Haiti recovers: physically, economically, socially, and psychologically. As a world community, brought together by television, computers, newspapers and radio, tragedies of this sort affect us all. Thinking back to the Chinese Earthquake, Hurricane Katrina, the Indian Ocean Tsunami, and 9/11; most of us recall how the images and tales of suffering made us feel. The "emotional aftershocks" rumble through each of us at some level.

Fit for the Future Print E-mail

Welcome to 2010! This was one of those benchmark years for many fitness industry organizations. At the time we were setting goals we thought 2010 was so far away that surely we would have the time to change the "fitness world" as we know it.

But as with so many things, time slipped away from us, and here we are; facing the same challenges of 10+ years ago: An aging baby boomer population, Obesity on the rise, Increased health care costs, and A relatively small percentage of the population choosing to exercise for wellness.

How often have we heard the phrase, "At least you have your health.." Maybe in the past it sounded trite. But now as health care reform has been brought to the forefront of our attention, and as we embark on a New Year with New Resolutions, perhaps the value of health and wellness is becoming more and more evident.

Does Pilates Help You Have Better Sex? Print E-mail

I came across an article the other day on a website called Inner Rewards. The article was called Have Better Sex with Pilates. Of course it drew my attention immediately (because I teach Pilates silly...).

And also because I am writing a book on sexual attitudes and behaviors and how they can effect our well being (www.ProfoundPleasure.com).

Basically what the article was saying is that Pilates can help you look and feel better which, along with a healthy diet can effect how we feel in our intimate relationships. I think we would all agree that having an active, healthful lifestyle does effect our energy levels, appearance, psychological outlook, self esteem and more. Certainly when we are feeling good – sex tends to be better!

Pilates In Italy Print E-mail

Piemonte Italy....

Tucked away in Northwest Italy, among lush rolling hills of vineyards is a lovely Agrituismo called Cascina Papaveri (Poppy Farmhouse). That is where I find myself this week - teaching Pilates,

Even as I blog, I am accompanied by wonderful glass of Barbera (Poppy Farmhouse specialty!); listening to Chef Gino speaking in broken English his special cooking lesson for Poppy's guests. As for me – I am happy just to listen from afar and later enjoy the fresh organic fare under the stars with our hosts John and Robyn.

"Holidazed?" Print E-mail

I just returned from a visit to Tokyo where I spent two weeks doing Pilates Teacher Training and Master Trainer Workshops. I got back home the day after Thanksgiving and found myself right smack in to the holiday season. You see I had been in Tokyo for Thanksgiving so I had missed all the lead up, preparation and ....Black Friday ads! Heck I pretty much missed Black Friday altogether! I was dazed. I was “Holidazed.”

Dedication to Wellness Print E-mail

I live in a most wonderful part of New Mexico. The weather is beautiful most days of the year. The skies are blue; the air is clean. Athletes come from around the world to train here. Evidence of an active community is everywhere – from bike trails buzzing with cyclists, to runners and hikers all committed to health and taking advantage of the weather. But today my thoughts linger on a different group of individuals; those who are dealing with life threatening disease and/or chronic pain. I am thinking about those for whom exercise and a lifestyle of wellness means more than fitting in the latest fashion, social groups or competitive event. I am thinking about those who exercise to beat the disease, to forestall surgery, or inevitable disability. True Heroes.

Wellness...

The term is so very common these days. While the concept of wellness or use of the word was coined in the 50's, we have only really been using the term for less than 20 years. The question is – What IS Wellness?

Many people think that Wellness is something like Health - only better; maybe more complete or three dimensional. Sometimes we also use the term “Whole Person Health” to try to convey something similar to wellness.

In this article we are going to discuss Wellness. What is it? Is True Wellness even attainable? And if so – how do we know if we embody it?
